It’s Like Chinese to Me

There are about 1,3 billion Chinese people in China, approximately a quarter of the world’s total population. Chinese economy is doing quite well while Europe’s and the United States economy is struggling to get back on their feet. China has recently eased on travel regulations and visa application procedures for their citizens, which have resulted in that there are more tourists visiting Sweden from China than other Asian country.

Sweden’s official website for tourism & travel information, VisitSweden, was quoted saying a few weeks ago in a TV news interview that “China is not a priority market”. Instead, due to an expected recession in Europe, the focus is on marketing weekend trips and 4 to 5 days stays to Sweden from other European countries. The Visit Sweden website doesn’t even have a summary in Chinese.

The ignorance about the importance of Chinese tourism to Sweden reminds me of an expression we often use in Sweden when we don’t understand something or it’s significance, “det är som Kinesiska” or “It’s like Chinese”, which is the equivalent of “It’s like Greek” in most parts of the English speaking world.

Despite the obvious differences between Chinese and Swedish culture, we DO have some similarities, such as society’s emphasis on the common good vs. the individuals needs, a strong pride in local cultural history, consensus building etc.

However, I strongly feel that Sweden has plenty more to offer Chinese tourists than quick visits to Stockholm and its archipelago, which by any account is a beautiful choice, but certainly not all there is to enjoy. I believe Sweden’s exceptionally clean lakes and rivers, vast forests, arctic regions, wildlife, food and local culture can offer plenty of unique experiences, exploration and adventure, if appropriately developed and marketed to our friends from China, and preferably in the Chinese language.

So, why is the Chinese tourist NOT a top priority? Well, it’s like Chinese to me.

The New Chinese Threat to the Dollar

Current Chinese and American monetary policies are diametrically opposed.

China has based its growth and rise to economic prominence on an export-led economic model, with the United States as a primary destination for Chinese-made goods. The result of this policy is a two trillion dollar foreign exchange reserve, of which roughly 60percent is denominated in dollars.

The US, on the other hand, has chosen a policy of monetary easing in to fight the current recession. It is running huge budget deficits, part of which is financed through money creation by the Federal Reserve. Such a vast increase in money supply can only lead to a devaluation of the dollar, which reduces the value of Chinese reserves.

The Chinese cannot allow thirty years worth of currency accumulation to evaporate as a result of inflationary US policy. They have sent US authorities repeated messages to that effect, including: top-level statements of concern; massive purchases of strategic metals; announcing their gold reserves are twice the size previously thought; reducing purchases of longer-term Treasury bonds.

The most recent Chinese move has been to start negotiations with Brazil to cut the dollar out of their mutual trade relations, which would rely on national currencies instead.

In response US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner traveled to Beijing in late May to reassure the Chinese concerning US policies. Perfunctory statements of agreement were exchanged as he left China. But on the day after Mr. Geithner departed, China announced negotiations with Malaysia similar to those with Brazil: no more dollar-denominated trade there either.

In other words, the visit by Mr. Geithner solved nothing. However, it goes way beyond that. The announcement is not just another message to the United States. It can well be the start of a new monetary strategy.

The type of economic transaction under negotiation with Brazil and Malaysia is essentially a barter deal based on the relative values of the two national currencies involved. As China has a large economy involving many buyers and suppliers, such a type of transaction can be expanded to any number of its trading partners, thereby creating a fairly large dollar-free economic zone.

This would in the short term reduce the importance of the dollar as the dominant world currency. The ultimate effect would be much more far-reaching.
The global primacy of the dollar is to a great extent based on the assumption that there is no available substitute for it.

The above strategy of dollar-free transactions, which is quite workable, undermines this assumption by showing that in many cases such a substitute is not needed. All that is required is agreement on the relative value of two national currencies.

Furthermore, if demonstrated successfully between, for example, China and Brazil, such a bilateral commercial strategy could be applied to transactions between countries other than China. Russia and Germany, for example, could in the same manner exchange energy products for engineering goods and services.

Finally, this approach to trade would gradually extinguish the key role of the dollar in pricing commodities, such as oil, sugar, copper or grains. These commodities would de facto come to be priced in terms of a basket of currencies, based on the actual volume of transactions in the various national units of account.

The dollar would then be then reduced to being the national currency of the United States, with significant consequences for this country and for the rest of the world. The US, no longer able to rely on the prominence of the dollar in global finance, would like any other country be fully responsible for the value of its own currency.

The Chinese initiative is therefore no idle threat. Whether the Chinese government will implement this new strategy across the board or even on a large scale is unknown. Very possibly they have no definite plan at this point. But a whole realm of possibilities has been opened.

What is certain is that the US government must now face the fact that its policies, so far dictated strictly by domestic concerns, may in the very near future have a major and lasting impact on the status of its currency.

The Chinese Feminist Rhetoric

To reach female audiences, women’s magazines such as Niizi shijie [Women’s World], Zhongguo niibao [Chinese Women’s Journal], and Niisheng [Women’s Voice] were published by progressive presses and feminist organizations during this period. Some major newspapers also added weekly supplements on women’s issues. By the mid-192 Os, the May Fourth new cultural project and feminist consciousness gained momentum in media throughout the country. In the late 1920s and 1930s, thousands of middle- and upper-class women became teachers and Diesel Jeans journalists; meanwhile, a large number of working-class women became workers in the cotton mills and textile factories in urban areas.

Breaking the prescribed gender roles, many women from different socioeconomic backgrounds participated in the anti-imperialist movement, the women’s movement, and the labor movement. A sizable group of women writers and activists ascended the cultural and political arena; among them were Chen Hengzhe, Bing Xin, Lu Yin, Chen Xuezhao, Shi Pingmei, Xian Jingyu, and Yang Zhihua, to name only a few. The discussions published in the progressive press laid the groundwork for the women’s movement and opened up a discursive space for many women writers to voice their ideas. During this time, Chen and Yang joined the debate and wrote to a readership that was concerned about women’s issues and their relation to social and cultural changes in China. In their essays, Chen and Yang explored what feminism meant to Chinese women and further developed the concept of niiquanzhuyi. They redefined women’s identities in ways that rejected the suppressive discourses that undermined women or hindered them from participating in social, cultural, and political activities.

Their work demonstrates a Chinese feminist rhetoric that defies the sexist portrayal of women and envisions new possibilities for Calvin Klein Jeans women in modern Chinese society. It is important to note that like many women who received higher education at that time, both Chen and Yang came from middle and upper-class backgrounds and belonged to a privileged elite group. Unlike thousands of Chinese women who worked in cotton mills, or textile, tobacco, and printing factories, Chen and Yang had rooms of their own to compose and publish their writings; this points to the heterogeneity of the female population during that period. In their rhetorical practices, Chen and Yang clearly underscored the issues of gender and culture. Although both women were aware of issues of class, Chen was restricted by her background and life experience, and touched these issues only on a surface level. Yang, a leader of the women’s movement and the labor movement, consistently spoke of and for working class women, emphasizing the necessity to improve their living and working conditions.

Herein, I just talk about this issue based on my years working experiences in Dandong Foundry in China.

First way, the best way is visiting your Chinese foundries.

The visiting will be the best and most direct method to inspect the equipments and administration of your suppliers. However, this way is also the most expensive method since China is very large, and many Chinese foundries located in the different places.

Second way, asking some questions related with the quality and technical issues.

Such as some questions about the casting process, physical properties, chemical components, quality control, heat treatment, defects, painting, delivery and other aspects. From their answers, you should be able to learn about their understanding to the production for your products. Of course, look over the photos to their products, casting foundries, machining and inspection equipments will be very basic and necessary.

Third way, searching the news and information from internet.

From Google, you could try to search their company name to check if there is any cheating, defraud, infringement or other bad news related with them. This is the cheapest way, but sometimes, you can not find enough information from internet.

Fourth way, making samples and starting the production from small batches.

If you think the foundry can make the castings for you, you could pay some prepayment for the patterns to ask them to make several samples.

However, there are two problems in this way. One is for the prepayment. Some buyer may want to refuse to pay the prepayment for the patterns, and want the supplier to make the samples free of charge. This is unfair to the foundries since they usually need to pay full payment when they pick up the patterns from the pattern workshops (most of Chinese foundries can not or do not make the patterns in-house). Therefore, 30% to 50% prepayment for the tooling should be reasonable for both buyers and suppliers.

Another problem is for the failed approval to the samples. If the samples have not passed the approval, then how to solve the prepayment problem? Personally, I think the foundries should refund full payment if their samples can not meet the requirements on the drawings or in the requirements, but the buyers should give more chances and time to supplier to allow them to remake the samples. After all, making samples is not an easy thing.

As I know, the most of Chinese foundries have a good reputation and credit, this is also the reason for many buyers have transferred their products to China. However, according to many years experiences in China, there are many difficult issues in quotations, samples, production and delivery. Both buyers and Chinese foundries should show their patience and sincerity to their cooperation.

Preparing the Ingredients

Make sure all of the ingredients are readily accessible. Cooking the Fried Rice
